WordPress

Months ago, Vinny told me about WordPress. He was all ranting and raving about the thing. Telling me that I HAD to make the switch from MT because WP was so much more functional, slick and mighty!

Understand that I am a creature of habit. I don’t like change a whole lot. When I find a place where I’m all comfy and cozy - I tend to dwell there, happily. But I took a look at it, regardless. It looked slick. It certainly did look mighty fine. But - you know….I was comfy.

Then all of a sudden all these friends around me started making the move. Jay did it. Then my bud Chelle did it. Of course, as I mentioned, Vinny made the move, too!

Now, I’m no sheep. I’m not one to do something just because everyone else is doing it. However - between the three of these blog buddies of mine . . . with the way they were going on and on (ad nauseum) about how awesome this tool really is…well, I was feeling - *sniff* - left out. You know - the wall flower. The girl who never gets asked to dance. The last one picked for the kickball team.

Of course, I realized I was doing it to myself. All I really needed to do was open up that program that I downloaded months ago and take a look inside the wrappings and see what all the hub bub is about. I’d prove them wrong. I was happily existing within my MT environment, thankyouverymuch.

Then I looked. It was…*sniff*…beautiful.

No rebuilding! Only THREE basic templates to do - not 8, or 9 or 10! The ability to password protect entries! The cute little smilies built right in! :) :D ;) < —SEE?

I played and tinkered. When I got the MYSQL database set up - the install took all of 5 minutes, tops. Once I got the template looking the way that I wanted - - the MT import took about 2 minutes and I was done!

Ok - so Jay, Vinny, Chelle - - - here it goes…..you know this doesn’t come very easy for me, so please empathize.

You were right.

GB - you betcha :) The reason why this blog is changing so much all the time is because I use Just A Girl as a guinea pig site to test all the cool stuff so I can continue to offer a variety of diverse services at Elegant Webscapes :)

Fluffy - it is free. You run it by uploading the entire program to your web server (if you don’t have one - I know of a Geat Host). Then you install it by following simple instructions and configure it and off you go :)

Absolutely spiffy, one hint, might want to remove the “Powered by: Moveable Type 2.63″. First thought was that was a WP permalink structure, so had to be WP.

Second thought was painted toenails, Rob would like this.

Third thought was why don’t I have this pic of A.J.?

So, aside from rebuilds, and less templates, is it the entry field that’s so nice? I use a posting tool along w/my MT that adds html tags and such… I love the floating content, but what else made you switch? The WP site is as dry as the MT site. Not much to go on…

  31. Jason
    1:09 am on April 12th, 2004

    yeah i had this

    now i have this

  32. Lisa
    7:19 am on April 12th, 2004

Daniel - The WP entry field has quick tags that make text formatting pretty easy. MT had the I, B, U, & URL tags and WP has those and a few more - also, it’s configurable (if you know where and how) to add more tags.
WP has an internal link management system so you don’t have to rely on blogrolling anymore and it’s (sometimes) slow response.

If you want to password protect a single entry - WP allows you to do that. IF that’s something you find functional.

For me, it’s a cleaner interface - the less detail I have to pay attention to, the better.

  33. Lisa
    8:10 am on April 12th, 2004

Jason - so far so good :)

Now ya just gotta get rid of that default template ;)

  34. Jason

I have to admit having more tags and local blogrolling is pretty swass

Don’t you just love friends who talk to you about stuff that will eventually make your weekend horrendous? I don’t really blame Vinny, though - he’s just trying to be helpful. But after our conversation - I’m considering making the jump. And true to my usual self, when I want to do something I do it now - not later . . . so I’m thinking maybe this weekend? He and I talked a great deal tonight about WordPress tonight - - and am spending some time at that site and browsing through the forums to see if it’s really, really worth making the change - like Vinny said it is. They now have a script that converts MT to WP - and from what I understand, it takes seconds to install.

I’ll learn more about it and see if it has features that are different that I absolutely have to have in order for me to live my quiet life happily. Look for WP updates!

**UPDATE**
Small update - - but a worthy one if you’re at all interested in WordPress. I installed WP one of my unused domains. It took all of 5 minutes:

1. Set up MYSQL database
2. Run the intall script
3. Done.

Now I need to play with it and figure out all the ins and outs of it before I try to implement it on any of my active blogs. Let me just say - it’s pretty slick.

Ahh yes, the proverbial shall I or shall I not :-)

I think, now that the script is out, I may play with it over the weekend. If the snow keeps up, I won’t be going anywhere anyway :-)
