Happy New Year - update your copyright statement

on: Jan/1/08 and its been viewed 2,298 times

It usually takes me until April to update the copyright statement that appears at the very bottom of my site, that is until now. For WordPress users - here’s what I use for my copyright statement, which updates, automatically, each year, and I don’t have to worry about it ever again:

© 2002 - <?php echo date('Y'); ?>

Happy new year to everyone - hope you had safe celebrations! Me? I was sicker than a dog with the flu that my brother and his family brought to Christmas celebrations at my folks house. I was down and out - complete with fever, chills, aches and pains, for three full days - but am on the mend now and beginning to see the light of day, finally!

Today is a holiday for me, in terms of work - so we’re taking down the Christmas tree and doing some new year cleaning and organizing around the house. I was taking some garbage outside earlier, and saw 12 deer standing in my back yard…less than 50 feet away.

Times like these I wish I carried a camera around with me wherever I go, because by the time I made it into the house to get the camera, and then back outside to snap the picture - the deer, of course, were gone. But, they were standing around in a circle around the area where my garden was in the summer - - I’m sure they were digging up veggies I hadn’t removed (carrots I hadn’t dug up, etc) and eating some of the apples that fell from the tree in the fall. Now I’ll be waiting for them to come back - I’ll have my camera ready, and everything… and they probably won’t return..but it was pretty cool.

Awww, the deer were a nice present. Sometimes you just have to take pictures in your mind. (sigh) That’s pretty awesome though.

I’m glad you’re feeling better, that’s the downside of family time is faulty immune systems. Poor thing.

Sorry to hear that you were sick, but I’m certainly glad you’re feeling better! We made it to Wisconsin and back without picking up anything contagious from the grandkids — and escaped just before a snow storm.

Cool seeing the deer, especially so many. We see deer often, but not many at one time.

With copyright, the use of a date is really meaningless. Years ago, the date was required because the term of the copyright protection was based on publication date. Today, the term of the copyright is life of the author plus 70 years, whether the work is published or not — Copy Right, Copy Sense.

However, my copyright date automatically updated in the template I am currently using.

Jamme - the deer were a nice present. RE: the camera, though? dammit!

Got your CD in the mail - not sure when you sent it, but it got here late last week! I love your annual updates! :x

Mike - good to hear you made it through the holidays flu-free. Wish I could say the same.

I realize the copyright date is meaningless…but, I have old-school habits sometimes lol Plus, it’s kind of nice sometimes to have it on the site to show off how long I’ve been at this stuff… like my business site says 1999 - 2008… shows longevity, I guess. thanks for the link, though - - interesting stuff! :)

Glad you’re feeling better. I’ve never had the flu so I can only go on what I’ve heard others say about it. Thanks for the info about the copyright. I’d like to show longevity too. There’s some code already in there, and being the newbie that I am, I have to figure out what to remove and what to keep. I’ll work on that later today.

Also, since I’m a newbie I don’t know the correct protocol/etiquette here so I’ll plunge right in. I notice several readers coming from your site to mine. I’d like to add your link to my blogroll. Is that acceptable?

@Mike - I didn’t see any shiny glowing red noses out there :)

@Debbie - happy to hear I’m sending traffic your way. If you want to add my link to your blogroll, please do - I’d be thrilled. Thanks!

It has now been added to my blogroll, thanks. BTW, the most deer I’ve seen in my yard was 4. People hunt all around us so I think they know a safe haven when they see it. Also, they seem to like the acorns that fall from our oak trees. No apples here.

One summer a sow and 5 piglets visited every day. It was okay until the front yard looked like it had been plowed. We had to run them off after that.
