Flattery will get you everywhere

In processing a new order for a design client this evening - he sent me an email to describe what he was looking for in the design of his blog. Included at the bottom of the email, I was very pleasantly surprised to find this:

I teach Public Relations courses at Auburn University ***. One of these classes is “style & design” (photoshop, indesign, quarkxpress) and another is “multimedia production” (digital video/audio and personalized/branded browsers and Flash) at Auburn University***.

Now, my students are learning simple web editing (via CMS packages) and using opensource templates for web pages (and writing a few of their own). They do use Dreamweaver, but these folks have never done any of this before. We cover a LOT during the semester. At the end, they will have created web pages (for delivery on a CD-ROM via a branded browser), newsletters, ads, brochures and other things in ‘.pdf’ format - also presented on the CD-ROM. Then, they have a flash presentation (a Powerpoint presentation on steroids, we like to call it) and their resume, too.

I do not teach PHP/MySQL or CSS. Our students are not going to be the designers, but they are going to have to understand the processes involved in implementing websites, newsletters, blogs, yadda-yadda/etc.

I really am trying to learn what you do, but ‘lordy’ your designs are beautiful!

So, since I’ve already been watching your blog in association with my class project (I have you and Dana in the blogroll of my site. You have been presented to them as ‘role models’ for good bloggers. Thought you’d get a kick out of that.),

Now if that doesn’t put a big smile on this girls face - I’m not quite sure what will.

Welcome to any of his students surfing through here. (*** the name of the University has been edited out because I didn’t ask this guy if I could post it here. I’m all about privacy, ya know. If he tells me it’s quite alright - then I’ll surely change it.)

That’s my warm fuzy for the day — it’s a gooder, too. :D

I think your blog design is marvelous. And I changing your skin every time I come to visit. Why does that sound so weird?

    Hey Lisa,

    Cool. I made your blog!

We can let them all know that it is ‘Auburn’ University. We say ‘War Eagle!’ here … and yes, that is a friendly greeting. We are located in “the loveliest village on the plains,” and on the friendliest campus.

    (See Oliver Goldsmith’s ‘Deserted Village)

Thanks Lisa. I’m enjoying working with you and I appreciate you taking on my lil’ project.

    Take care.

    Robert

Lisa, I might just be a Georgia Girl but I will say Auburn University is everything anyone could ever dream of or want when they picture or dream of the perfect place in the South…friendly people and such a beautiful area. and Robert could not have found anyone better or more talented to do design work for him…You are the best.

Aww, thanks Vickie :) Judging by my interaction with Robert, so far - I’d say that he’s a good example of what you describe about Auburn. :)

I’m very highly flattered to be considered another of the “good” bloggers. And more than a little nervous. At any rate, thanks, Robert!
