When I submitted the final, final edits for the second edition of WordPress For Dummies today - I breathed a tremendously huge sigh of relief. There is nothing like that feeling of accomplishment to carry you through to the next day. This was a big project - - just as it was the first time around, and having it finished, finally not only lifts a great big weight off the ol’ shoulders…but it made me reflect a bit. As I’m uploading the last and final files..I could feel myself physically relax. I sat back and thought - - I really do love what I do.

I’ve held several jobs in my lifetime. Some I liked, some I didn’t. Jobs like:

McDonalds (would you like fries with that? yea, that was me)

Disc Jockey for a local, polka radio station (yep. Polka)

Lead singer in a local R&B band

Waitress at a local greasy spoon

Bartender at a local night club… a local bowling alley..and a local 5-star restaurant - - simultaneously!

Secretary…receptionist…data entry clerk

Community organizer for the local Chamber of Commerce

Nursing Assistant

Registered Nurse (my longest… that career spanned 10 years, or so)

Web and graphic designer and web host (current)

Author (also current)

Some of those jobs were held out of neccessity. I didn’t really like them - but they paid the bills, so I tolerated them.
Some of those jobs were stepping stones to other jobs (nursing assistant - to - registered nurse, for example).

Growing up, I was always told to do what I love. Find something you’re good at and make a living out of it.. you’ll be happier. Unfortunately, starting out as a young adult - - the job that I loved didn’t pay the bills (the R&B singer gig). So I had to move on to a job that DID pay the bills . . leaving me absolutely NO time to do the job that I love.

Sigh.

At the age of 24, I graduated from nursing school with a degree in nursing and sat for the board exams to obtain my Registered Nurse licensure. I was pretty much set for life in an industry that paid well and offered a great deal of job security. I pretty much thought I would be a nurse until the day I retire.

Until I started tinkering around with graphic design and CSS and began to dabble in code. I found a great hobby that allowed me to de-stress and blow off steam after long, hard days of work in the hospital. It was a creative outlet that I soon began to realize was soothing the savage beast. Design satisfied the creative side of me… something I had lost when I walked away from music, so many years ago. It would be many years before I began to make a few bucks at it - - and several more years before I could make a living from it.

Although, I never once thought I would make a living with it - - always assuming that nursing would be where I would stay for my entire working life. Nursing was one of those ok jobs. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. It was . . . fine. I was good at it - - excelled in it, really - and took pride in that fact. But I wasn’t doing what I loved… nor was I loving what I did.

I am a true believer that if you do not love what you do - - it shows through at the end of the day. People can start to see it in your work, no matter what it is. For me? I didn’t want to get to that point in nursing - - nothing worse than being cared for by a nurse who doesn’t like what she’s doing, eh?

Today, with my design career and, most recently, book writing gig — I can truly say that I finally love what I do.. and am doing what I love. I make a decent living at it, and I’m very thankful for that….and grateful that I don’t have to focus my attentions and time on other side jobs in order to make ends meet, like I used to. I can really focus on what I enjoy doing and what I’m good at.

Are you doing what you love…and loving what you do? If not - are you working towards that end? It’s not an easy thing, no doubt. First priorities are putting food on the table and paying those bills - which, like me, forced you into jobs that you don’t really like - - but become a necessary evil as a means to and end. When I opted to quit my nursing career to pursue design, I really had to spend a lot of time to take a real, long hard look at where I was at, and where I wanted to be. If the day comes that I’m no longer happy with design — I will take a similar look and, hopefully, will be able to make changes where I can pursue that lofty goal of loving what I do..and doing what I love.

For me, it took a great deal of time, struggle, sleepless nights and endless days . . but I got there. And yet, I still wonder if I’ll be doing the same thing next year? If I’m lucky enough, I will be.

And on that note - I shall finally sleep. ‘Nite!

I get this question a lot: How do you always know what’s coming with the next WordPress release??. I can tell you that I’m not a member of some secret society. I don’t have an exclusive inside track into WordPress Development. I don’t talk to the core WordPress developers on a regular basis (quite actually, our paths cross every so often..ever so briefly…every once in a great while). It’s not super secret information that only a few are privvy to.

Basically to answer the question: I make it my business to know.

Up and coming changes to the WordPress core is publicly available information. . . available to anyone and everyone who really wants to know. Although, not everyone is like me. I upgrade my WordPress installation with the latest and greatest and am already looking forward to the next. I’m a consumer of WordPress — well, gobbler, really, if you want to get technical. I gorge myself on WordPress - - which is why I have taken it upon myself to find out where to find out! Of course, it helps that I am the author of the WordPress For Dummies book project, as the author of that book, there is a lot of pressure to stay current and always keep myself constantly looking forward… but even without the book, I’d inquire and dig and find out. ‘Cause I’m nosy like that

You can make it your business to know, too - if you really want to. That’s what this post is for .. to give you all those little nooks and cranny’s on the web that you can bookmark, subscribe to and pour over in order to get the latest scoop! If I’ve missed a resource (and I’m SURE I will) - feel free to add ‘em in the comments!

**Disclaimer!!! The information found within these sites is NOT all-inclusive, exhaustive… NOR is it a guarantee that the features you read about on these sites are set in stone for future releases! (This disclaimer is so that you can’t come back to me at a later date and say “HEY LISA! That site you sent me to said WordPress version 10 would wash my dishes and mow my lawn…but it doesn’t!” — don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

Finding future WordPress Features

Where to find information on future WordPress features

WordPress Roadmap - want to know the approximate schedule for future WordPress releases? Check this out.

WordPress Trac - a lot of people have a difficult time reading the Trac, and I don’t really blame them, if you’re not used to it, it can be somewhat confusing. But, if you spend some time to browse through it - you can find gems of information. For example:

The WordPress 2.7 Milestones; including development tickets that have been resolved for 2.7 and active tickets that remain unresolved for 2.7.

You can find the milestones for 2.8, 2.9, and 3.0… if you really wanted to. Chances are, LOTS of things will change between now and 3.0 - - but feel free to nose around if you want to.

If you feel bold enough, you can contribute to the WordPress Trac by submitting a bug report, if you find a true bug in WordPress (first, do yourself a favor and be sure that it’s a true bug and not something jiggy with your set up or hosting service.) - - If you’re a developer/programmer/coder and think you’d like to submit a patch or two for consideration - check out Mark Jaquith’s Unix WordPress Toolbox and/or Peter Westwood’s Windows WordPress Toolbox.

If you find all the terminology a bit daunting in the Trac - check out their glossary of keywords they use to familiarize yourself with the lingo

WordPress Mailing Lists are a great place to stay up to date on what’s going on with current and future WordPress Development. Funny little anecdote on this - - back in 2006 when I accepted and signed the contract to write WordPress For Dummies - I was a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information I needed to compile. On top of that, knowing that by the time I was done compiling it - - it would change… not once, but TWICE during the course of writing the book. I (very naively) send an e-mail to Matt Mullenweg asking him what huge changes I could expect with the next version (at that time, it was 2.3). He must have read that and thought, “What a dork.” (or something like that). He wrote back and simply said “Subscribe to the WP Testers mailing list and follow it.” I’ll give him credit - - he could have written back and said something akin to “RTFM, dipshit” But, he didn’t - - he’s nice like that.

Did I mention WordPress Mailing Lists??? That’s probably where I get the bulk of info on future features.

The WordPress Codex has nice page on what to expect in 2.7

Here’s an obscure little resource - - every once in awhile I can garner some good information by subscribing to the feed for the WordPress Developers Blog on WordPress.com. This is a great use of the Prologue theme, by the way. Haven’t heard of it - - check it out! Anyways - this site is a running dialogue from the WordPress developers - updated with snippets of information about features, bug fixes, etc. I’ve subscribed to the full RSS feed for updates. (Note: this is not to be confused with the WordPress Development Blog - which is where you can nab information and news about WordPress, overall.)

There are a few bloggers that I subscribe to who I can usually count on to make informative posts on what to expect in future versions of WordPress. These folks are: Aaron Brazell @ Technosailor (he usually does a ‘What You Should Know About WordPress version X.X’ post a few weeks before it’s release date - like this one he did for WordPress 2.6.), Weblog Tools Collection (check out their most recent post: Features Planned for WordPress 2.7).

Want to download every single version of WordPress ever made???? Yea, me neither - but you can if you want to because WordPress.Org keeps a release archive - - this archive INCLUDES release candidates and beta releases, if you are brave enough to live on the edge

So

….don’t know what to expect in the upcoming version of WordPress 2.7?? I’m not going to tell you - - you have all you need to find out and keep yourself updated!

I really do like Brett Favre and I do really hope he’s happy playing for the Jets. Honest. But.. I’m feeling a bit like a jilted lover over here…like the guy who says “I just can’t handle a relationship right now..can we just be friends??”… then, BAM! The very next week you’re seeing him with someone new…and not only handling a relationship - - but HAPPY about it too. I’m feeling pangs of jealousy over hearing reports from the object of Brett Favre’s attentions..and how happy and excited they are at the prospect of a new season with the NFL’s best quarterback…meanwhile, we’re back here in Wisconsin trying to get to know, and eventually come to love this new guy - - what’s his name? Aaron….something.

I think I need therapy.

WordPress version 2.6.1 was released yesterday - this blog has upgraded. I’ve not experienced any problems with the upgrade at all. This is not a mandatory or security upgrade at all - you’re safe not to do the upgrade, if you don’t want to (doesn’t it feel like we JUST upgraded to 2.5 …then 2.6..now…? haha). It’s more of a maintenance update, as reported by Keith @ WTC.

Upgraded: WordPress 2.6.1

The official WordPress blog reports: “If you’re happy with 2.6, however, keep on using it. You need not upgrade to 2.6.1 if 2.6 is getting the job done.”

Some of the main updates to this version are:

Some improvements for international users

Permalink fix for those using IIS hosting configurations

The red marker for plugins that need updates sometimes didn’t go away, even after you updated the plugin. That’s been fixed - it should go away now. (yay)

Links were not assigned to the default Link Category once a Link Category was deleted. Now they are.

Chris and I will be attending the Blog World and New Media Expo being held in Vegas, September 19-21st. We’re excited to be going to Vegas and attending this conference. Are you planning on going? It’s just a little over a month away! If you ARE wanting to go, but haven’t registered yet - at the end of this post I have a happy little discount for registration for the conference, just as a thanks for dropping by my site and taking the time to read

Join me at Blog World!

The conference is geared towards people who publish their own media - whether it’s bloggers, podcasters, video bloggers, photographers.. it pretty much runs covers everyone who is publishing today. From the Blog World Expo website:

Any Blogger, Vlogger, Podcaster, Internet TV or Radio Broadcaster, Social Media expert or producer of any other form of new media content. If you blog about business, technology, politics, sports, lifestyle & culture, general news items, or celebrity gossip…if you are a Milblogger, or Godblogger, or advocate a social position you need to be here. If you are serious about your blogging, If you want to increase your readership, improve the look or functionality of your blog, if you want to influence decision makers, sell a product or service, if you want to promote yourself as an industry expert, or build your brand using new media then you cannot afford to miss BlogWorld & New Media Expo.

Check out the Conference Schedule - it’s pretty packed with great panels and speakers who are well known and knowledgeable in their specific areas. From SEO to Social Media…. Professional Blogging and tools of the trade - this conference has got it covered. Just Day One of the schedule looks pretty packed - - it’s going to be a hard choice on what presentation we will be attending on that day.

I didn’t get to attend last year due to scheduling problems on my end (read: too much work, not enough time!) - but the reports I heard from people who did attend were really positive and amazing. Lots of great information presented, blogging tools, good networking with others in your niche, great presentations and teaching - I didn’t hear a negative thing about it.

This year, we’re going and looking forward to meeting up with a few good friends:

Paul Chaney - Paul and I go back a loooooooooooooong, long way and I truly treasure his friendship through the years. I’ve met up with him a few times in the past at SXSW in Austin and am looking forward to seeing him, and his wife Amy, in Vegas in September.

Charnell Pugsley - Charnell works for Peer 1 and ServerBeach. We have been very happy clients of theirs for YEARS and I had the fortunate chance to meet her at SXSW in Austin this past March. I can’t say enough about Charnell - she’s really fabulous. (Plus, she recently did a very flattering post about me with information on my proposed panel for SXSW - what’s not to love??)

Are YOU going? Please let me know - - maybe we can hook up over coffee, or something!

Now, on to that happy little discount I mentioned at the beginning of this post…..

I’ve recently shared a few nice emails with Rick Calvert, the founder and organizer of Blog World. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet him in person at SXSW in March earlier this year, so it was really nice to touch base with him again. In our talks, Rick very generously provided me with a VIP code to offer to my friends — that would be YOU. This is a promotion code that you can use to get a full 20% off the cost of the conference registration. This VIP code expires September 1 - so if you want to get that 20% discount, you need to register between now and then!

All you need to do? Drop a comment in this post and let me know that you’re planning to register and attend the BWE conference and would like my VIP discount. I will then email it to you right away so you can nab the 20% benefit.

I’m a big fan of movies. Of all sorts, really..I can’t really nail down an exact genre of films that appeals to me more than others. Every once in a while, a film comes a long that just grips me, holds my attentions and sparks my passion and intrigue. I can name a handful of films right now, off the top of my head: The Red Violin (Violon rouge, Le), Man on Fire, Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Lucky Number Slevin, The Constant Gardner, The English Patient - - and to throw a little fetish and change into the mix, Kinky Boots and Fight Club.. These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now - - there are masses of others that makes it very difficult for me to name just ONE favorite movie of all time, whenever I’m presented with those questionnaires that ask me to do so.

A Good Year; Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard

Usually, with these films, I can watch them countless number of times and I’m still just as enamored with them as I was the very first time. The list of movies I like is incredibly long…. the list of movies I LOVE is a shorter list, and I usually have to watch a film a least a dozen times before that film makes it on the LOVE list - - because I have to discover that the feelings and emotions that I had the very first time I watched the film still linger after the twentieth (or more) time I watched it. It’s kind of like the guy you end up marrying - - you don’t really marry him unless his kiss can still make your toes tingle time after time, ya know?

I added a new film to my LOVE list lately - and I actually knew that this film was on my love list before this post, but I think it took my watching it again over the weekend for me to consciously decide that this was the case. With this film - it’s a few things about it.

The movie is called “A Good Year” and stars Russell Crowe, One of the very last great lines of the movie was when Marion Cotillard’s character, Fanny, is taking Russell Crowe’s character, Max’s order at the cafe - she asks him what he wants and he replies:

I want a bottle of wine that tastes like you . . . in a glass that is never empty

Ok - I know, it sounds trite, but you would have had to have watched the entire film. The line gets me every single time.

Without giving the entire film away - because I really think you should watch it…the film is about a man who is on the top of his game as a high level stockbroker in a very fast, stress filled lifestyle. His uncle dies and has left a quaint French chateau with a winery that Max is now faced with having to fix up and sell, so he travels to France to get it done. While there, he finds himself on a journey of self-discovery, love, family, childhood memories, food and wine. In the end, it dawns on him. . . what good is all the money from your hard work in the world if you are not able to stop and enjoy the fruits of your labor from time to time?

The movie makes me want to move to France (gasp!), buy a winery and spend long lazy days in the sun sitting on the patio drinking wine and eating food dipped in rich olive oil, in the company of interesting friends and people I love. Every single time I watch that movie, I look at my husband and say “Hey, lets move to France??” - him, being British, will, of course, have nothing to do with thoughts of moving to France - - it’s against his very nature. Although, he does pull out the “I want a bottle of wine that tastes like you…in a glass that is never empty” line out every once in awhile, just to keep me happy. Heh.

I switched from Microsoft’s Outlook to Mozilla’s Thunderbird for email handling about 8 months ago. Why? Curiosity, I guess - - nothing more, really. In those 8 months, Thunderbird crashed a total of 4 times - and each time, I had to spend a considerable amount of time rebuilding my email. Earlier this week, I had a complete system crash and ended up rebuilding my entire PC from scratch. I had backed up my Thunderbird files using MozBackUp - however, when I went to restore those backed up files after rebuilding .. everything was gone. *Poof*

I took this opportunity to start using Outlook, once again, for email handling. Say what you will about it, I’ve never had a crash to the proportions I experienced with Thunderbird.. and whenever I have had problems… solutions were very easy to find. Along with email, I’ve started using Outlooks calendar, once again, for appointments and such. A couple of months ago, I had started using Google Calendar so I could share it with Lindsey because she does some of my scheduling for me when it comes to client phone consults and interviews, etc. We decided that using Google’s Calendar would allow me to block out the times I am not available so she could see the times that I am available so she can easily schedule things for me. I can now sync my Outlook with Google’s calendar so I can make my availability changes on my local machine and it syncs with Google… and vice versa, when Lindsey updates my Google calendar with a client appointment - it syncs with my Outlook calendar. So far, it’s a pretty decent setup.

How could you accomplish this? It’s pretty darned simple…..

Download GoogleCalendarSync

When the dialogue box opens - click Save File and save it to a location on your own computer

Open the executable file and click Run

Read through the terms of use statement that appears and then click I Agree

Follow the rest of the installation directions, then click Install to complete the installation on your machine

Once installed, the Google Calendar Sync window appears:

Google Calendar Sync - Sync your Outlook with your Google Calendar

Type the email you use for logging into Google in the Email field

Type your Google password in the Password field

Choose your Sync Option:

2-way: This syncs your Google Calendar with your Outlook and, vice versa, it syncs your Outlook with your Google Calendar. So, you can make changes in either calendar - and it will sync up.

1 way: Google Calendar to Outlook Calendar - This syncs only Google events with Outlook.

1 way: Outlook to Google Calendar - This syncs only Outlook events with Google Calendar

Specify the time you want the syncs to occur, in minutes

Click Save

And that’s it. GoogleCalendarSync will sync right away, after you click Save - - and then it will sync every X minutes (where ‘X’ is the time you specified during your setup).

Happy calendaring!

I couldn’t describe the last 24 hours of my life without getting a homicidal twinge. It all started with a hard reboot coupled with a battery backup failure during an electrical storm (one of many we’ve had here in the past few days). After the reboot, I got the dreaded blue screen of death on my PC. I’m not usually a reactionary type. I stay pretty pulled together during times of stress and crisis…normally. Blue screens, however? They make me nail bitey.

Which takes me to my the next phase of my homicidal rage. See, I’ve had these brand new hard drives and brand new RAM just hanging around my office for the past month, just waiting for a moment in time that I could possibly find to rebuild my computer. It was in BAD need of love..and I knew it. But, I kept pushing the envelope because.. well….time. Between design projects, book writing and edits and ..just…life….time is evasive. There’s just not enough time to stop and love my PC.

Apparently, it got really sick and tired of all the neglect and decided to walk out. It’s only until something like that happens that you truly appreciate what you had, now that its gone, hey?

So I was forced to drop everything and rebuild. I do love my 2 new VelociRaptor SATA 300GB Hard Drives coupled with a fantastic upgrade from 2GB RAM to a blazing new 6GB (Corsair Dominator DDR2. I’m adoring the speed at which my PC operates, currently. (Remember when Bill Gates said “640K ought to be enough for anybody.” ?? Ha!)

After doing a clean install of XP and running the GAZILLION service pack updates.. then installing MS Office and running yet another GAZILLION updates - I finally had a clean, working system and promptly went to work re-installing my Adobe CS3, Mozilla, Corell Suite and all my must have programs..including all the little apps that make my life livable…including Thunderbird for email.

That’s where I ran into my snag. My email. I have been using MozBackUp to do daily backups of my email because I’ve learned some pretty hard lessons in the past with email program crashes…so luckily, I had an 8/4/08 Thunderbird backup from that morning (pre-crash). Long story short…I did a restore with my backup and…..nothing. *crickets* I tried with my other backup files, as well… and no love.

No emails. No accounts. No message rules and filters. No settings… no nothing. I’m looking at a Thunderbird email program that is a blank slate.

You’re talking to a girl who saves EVERYTHING. Every business email - every correspondence. I archive it all. You just never know when you need this stuff, ya know? And here, I’m looking at a blank Thunderbird that is asking me if I’d like to set up a new email account? Ugh.

I am hoping that I will figure this out and will be able to successfully restore my emails soon. In the meantime, I need my program functional - so I’ll be spending a few hours this morning rebuilding the email from the ground up. I still have the backup files - - so I am thinking there *is* hope and that maybe…hopefully… I’m just too buzzed from the whole ‘restoring my entire system from scratch’ experience and if I just step away from it for awhile….I’ll have a bit more luck with it later.

If you’ve emailed in the last 24 hours - I have to apologize. It’s probably going to take another 24 hours to get myself back to normal around here - so I very much appreciate your patience!

It’s no big surprise that the majority of my design business thrives on national and international clients. Having a presence on the web will do that for you - your business is found by people from all over the world. If you run a design shop - your experience is probably much the same as mine, in that regard.

But when is the last time you turned your focus locally to build business relationships? There is probably a virtual landmine of business opportunities right in your own hometown that you are possibly overlooking when your focus is global.

I live in a small town in Wisconsin called West Bend. We have an estimated 32,000 population here and its a thriving city with many small businesses. I can say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that nice website design is not a concept that has touched this city very much at all - - most small business in my community have really poor websites. Take the Official website of the City of West Bend for example and you’ll see what I mean! These poor guys are in desperate need of someone, who knows what they are doing, to step in and take control of that beast!

Here’s an example from an experience I had last week:

My husband, Chris, and I like to fish. We consider it stress relief. We’re not serious fisherme…er.. fisherpeople, by any stretch of the imagination. However, I’ve been a fishing enthusiast since before I knew how to walk. My Great-Grandpa Ame taught me all about the art of fishing on the banks of the Mississippi where we would fish for bullhead and catfish. Then we’d go camping in Iowa where I’d learn how to reel in perch, sunfish and crappie. By the time I was 7 years old - I was baiting my own hook, reeling in my catch, removing the fish from the hook all by myself - - not bad for a girl! Though, I never did catch on to the art of cleaning the fish. Seriously, I would mangle those poor things into unrecognizable pieces that could only be described later, at the dinner table, as fish nuggets.

I digress.

A couple times a week, Chris and I drop what we’re doing and head out to fish for a few hours. It’s quiet and peaceful and it doesn’t require a computer - which is a bonus! When we’re just fishing for fun - we’ll go down to the Milwaukee River with a fishing pole, a hook, a bobber and some nightcrawlers and pull in bullheads, carp, catfish and bluegills. Since I was a kid, the general rule of thumb for fishing in the Milwaukee River is that you don’t eat what you catch - - just don’t risk it. So we practice the whole catch-and-release method of fishing there. When we want to do some serious fishing - we’ll head out to Big Cedar Lake or Little Cedar Lake to fish for walleye, bass and northern pike.

Back to my story about local design work…. recently, we’ve decided we’d get a little more serious about chasing the big and small mouth bass in the area. We needed to learn and read a little about different techniques and equipment that other experienced bass fisherman have had with bass in the area. So I, naturally, turned to the internet. I found a great deal of information by just typing the keywords “Bass fishing for beginners” in Google and spent a few hours just reading about it.

Armed with that information - I now had the names and types of lures to use for bass fishing.. so I turned to Google again and searched for local bait and tackle shops where we could go pick up some of this stuff.

I found a great looking Bait and Tackle shop right here in town - - not 10 minutes away from our front door! Based on the information presented in their website - - they have a great selection of everything we’re looking for… including free advice on where the fish are biting and different locations that work best for area fisherman. Ready to become pros at this bass fishing thing, yesterday, Chris and I drove out to Main Street to find this place, so that we could spend an unnecessary amount of money on spinners, crainkbaits, jigs and other things we probably don’t need. (I’m sure bass will hit a worm just as easily as they’d hit a spinner, but we were getting serious now, you know).

We approached the address and pulled into the parking lot and were face-to-face with a Mexican grocery store. Confused, we looked around the area to see if maybe we had the address wrong, and couldn’t see the place. So, I picked up my cell and called the phone number that was listed on their website to see if I could get the address to their new location.

A recorded voice told me “the number you are trying to reach has been disconnected.” Damn.

So, off we went … we headed out to Little Cedar Lake and fished with minnows and nightcrawlers, figuring we’d have to wait a few more days for our professional bass fishing to begin… at least until we found another tackle shop that carried the lures we have been dreaming about.

Later that evening, I looked at the bait and tackle shops website again. I noticed an email address in the bottom left corner of the site and decided to drop them an email. Just a courtesy, mind you - - requesting that they remove their website, since they are clearly out of business and how mildly irritating it was to drive to their location only to find that they are no longer there.

To my surprise, the next day - I got a reply! “Jim” told me that they are not out of business — they’ve just moved their store location to a smaller city called Port Washington (which is about a 15 minute drive east of here). “Jim” went on to explain that they have contacted the company who hosts their site and asked to have the site updated to reflect the new information - - but it’s been out of date for several months, as they have not heard back from their hosting company…and the site cannot be updated without them.

Of course, I could not resist. Seriously - - could you resist?

I wrote him back and explained what business I am in and how I could easily set him up with a website that would enable him to have control over his own changes. I explained how, with a content management system like WordPress, he could update his website daily…HOURLY if he wanted to - - and he wouldn’t have to be dependent upon a third party company to make those updates for him. He could keep his website updated with the information that his clients, and potential clients, need to know - - little things like, oh..I don’t know…. new store locations, perhaps??

See, having an up to date website isn’t just important for the big guys. These little small town business thrive on the locals to keep them in business. If I hadn’t emailed “Jim” - I would have just walked away thinking that the bait and tackle shop had gone out of business completely, and would have taken my business elsewhere… probably to one of those big, corporate sports shops. I would not have assumed they just up and moved their store to a different location.

More and more, even locally, people turn to the web to find information on what is available in their local area. It was a thrill for us to find a nice locally owned store so close by - - and it was a let down to drive there and find that it was now a Mexican grocery. Nothing against Mexican grocers - - but I’m not sure how well tamales work for bass bait!

We’ll see if “Jim” takes my bait (ha!) — I hope he does though! I seriously wouldn’t mind trading design services for some Lake Michigan fishing charter trips!

Update: I heard back from ‘Jim’ tonight. We have a meet scheduled this week to discuss the business of hosting and redoing his entire website set up. He also referred me to a Lake Michigan Fishing Charter that he works with and they want to launch a brand new website, as well. Being a cranky website visitor pays off in the end..ha!
