Edwards Stem Cell Vision: ‘We will stop juvenile diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other debilitating diseases… When John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going get up out of that wheelchair and walk again.’
Wow!
Kerry and Edwards are going to eradicate juvenile Diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s??? The will make the paralyzed walk again?
Is it just me, or does this smack of one of those Evangelist Revival meetings? The only thing missing here is the planted ‘blind’ audience member who experiences a miracle during one of Kerry/Edwards campaign speeches! The blind person approaches - - gets touched by Edwards and can see again!
It’s a miracle!

at least it smacks of a step in the right direction…

I think it smacks more of making promises you can’t keep, or have absolutely no idea if you can keep them. Better to promise progress and changes in stem cell research policies - rather than promising the eradication of disease if you elect him.

Saw you on blogexplosion, nice site!
As for Edwards, he’s just politicizing off of someone’s death, when he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’ll come back to bite them in the ass…

Great blog!
I posted about that on my page too, leaving tomorrow to find Kerry and see if he will heal my bad knee!

John Edwards said he can make me taller, too!

Your man was wearing an earpiece and a wired transmitter during the last debate. Don’t faith healers do that kind of thing? To make it seem like they are all knowing, while people in the audience feed tham facts via microphones.

When I saw Edwards saying that on the TV I just could not help but laugh. Oh and how nice of him to use Chris Reeve’s death as a part of their campaign. What a total jackass!

You liberals just can’t admit when your guy does something stupid, can ya? Just admit it. Say, “Yea - that was kinda stupid”.
shit, I have no problems saying when I think Bush did something dumb.

LOL Lori - I fully agree!

nice. Problem with Diabetes is that it is been proven to be an autoimmune problem. big deal you say. well They can harvest all the stem cells they want and keep building pancreases(sp) and implanting them, because the body will always reject it, just like it did the original one.

Hey Lisa, Here’s another “funny” I found on the Internet. I actually like this guy’s blog, too. He has some pretty interesting views on polical stuff:

Given his position on stem cell research I seriously doubt that Edwards comments would be unwelcomed by Christopher Reeve or his family. In fact I would be more inclined to believe he would have applauded the action. Stem cell research may not be the answer to all of those ailments and indeed is unlikely to have much of an effect even during the Kerry term, but it stands a better chance of achieving its goals under Kerry than it does with Bush’s riligious doctrine.

This woman called into a radio show this morning as I drove to work - she had a husband that sustained 2 spinal cord injuries and was now in the same boat as Reeve was. She was furious at the notion that these people could give false hope. They are well aware that there is no overnight, magical cure.
9:49 am on October 14th, 2004
Not overnight, but 4 years earlier under Kerry that it would be under Bush. The woman should be outraged that someone would put their personal religious bigotry ahead of searching for any possible cure for her husband.

So, Redfred — you’re ok with creating life in order to destroy it? Even before you even know if it’s a feasible cure?
Bush didn’t ban stem cell research. He placed restrictions on the federal money that will be spent on creating more lines. There are existing lines that researchers are FREE to investigate and determine if they can develop a cure. He has placed restrictions on federal money that will enable them to create life in order to destroy it for research purposes - - it’s not as if they don’t have stem cell lines to research and develop.
He didn’t BAN the development of new lines, either. He just restricted federal money towards it. If the cure is just sitting there waiting to be found - why doesn’t some rich pharmaceutical company spend the money to R&D it themselves? Answer: no one really knows if the cure exists or not and there is no current research to support that there is, which is why precious few private dollars are being put toward it.
I think if Kerry is such an advocate for it — he should take some of his wife’s money and spend it to help people like Reeves walk again. As a matter of fact - - if he was so hot about it, why didnt’ he? He was within his legal rights to do so.

First off, I never said Bush banned Stem cell research, but the funding restrictions will amount to the same thing to a greater or lesser extent. I certainly don’t have any moral objections to the collection of stem cells for the purpose of this research.
I think you are wrong to put the burden of this research on to the private sector or private individuals, can you imagine the consequences of that? “Sorry Mr. Smith we haven’t found a cure for this yet because it simply wasn’t profitable†or “You condition simply didn’t garner enough sympathy from the general public for us to get the donations required†What an abhorrent scenario, and all the more reason that politics should be kept out of the decision making with regard to research.
As far as there being no guarantees about the success of this research in finding the cure, when ever is research ever guaranteed? Should we not conduct experiments unless we know we are going to get results? How are we even going to know if there was potential if we never look into anything in the first place. This research was not restricted because it lacked validity, it was restricted because of its involvement in the abortion issue, because of Politics, because it is election year, and if that is not the saddest reflection on our society then I do not know what is.
12:56 pm on October 14th, 2004
I find it interesting that, on one hand, you think politics should be kept out of the decision making of research - - and yet, at the same time you advocate for full government involvement. So it’s ok if the political wind is blowing for it, rather than against it.
I agre with you about there being no guarantees in regards to research on any level. The research funding was restricted because, you’re right, it involves the creation of life in order to destroy it for the purpose of research - and I happen to think that is shaky ground . . and I’m a pro-choice advocate!
However, I understand the issue at hand - - it creates an odd precedent - - for what other purposes can research create life in order to destroy it for reasons of science? Like it, or not, there is a huge pro-life proponent in this country that disagrees with the ethics involved in the creation, and then subsequent destruction of life for the purposes of research.
John Kerry is one of them, as a matter of fact. He has stated that he believes that life begins at conception - apparently he has no problem with the creation/destruction of life. So for some, it may be a conglomeration of cells with no meaning. But for John Kerry - and other pro-life advocates - it is life that is being created and then destroyed. Bush has restricted federal monies toward that end.
And why not private companies performing the research? It’s done in various other capacities in terms of pharmaceutical R&D, etc. The cloning folks are all privately funded, too. If there is merit - the private companies would be clamoring to lead R&D charge in stem cell research - - and in some arenas, there probably are some.
Redfred - this could literally go on for days - let’s agree to disagree
